Help! My domain points to the wrong site!

You have followed these steps to make sure your new domain points to HostKitten. You verified the DNS is set correctly. However, it will take a while for the Internet to update the DNS throughout the world. This is a normal process.

How long does it take for my DNS to resolve ?

It can take as little as 1 hour for your DNS to resolve, however, it usually takes between 24-48 hours for a domain to fully propagate.

Advanced troubleshooting

This is weird... some people can reach my site without problem, others still have problems even after 48 hours. What now?

If people can find your domain, that means your new address has propagated just fine. However, some internet providers have their own cache that they only update once a week, or worse, once a month. In that case, people who access they internet using such a provider, may be sent to limbo.

There is nothing you as the website owner can do about it, but if it is paramount that people reach you, there are three options open for them... and you may have to tell them about that.

  1. They can ask their ISP to update their caches.
  2. They could try using OpenDNS or Google DNS (instructions can be found on the Internet for that.
  3. They can continue to wait until your internet provider updates their caches. Eventually, it will clear up!
